SolaHD™, a brand of Emerson, has announced its Power Supply Redundancy (RED) Modules, a new line of compact, high-performance units engineered to eliminate single points of failure in critical power supply architectures. The modules continuously monitor two parallel power supplies and seamlessly migrate load from a failing supply to its healthy counterpart, ensuring uninterrupted operation before downtime ever occurs. Accepting a wide input voltage range of 10.8–30.8 V DC (SELV) and supporting a nominal output of 12–28 Vdc with inverse battery protection, SolaHD RED Modules are purpose-built for critical applications like process control, remote locations, or production systems where power interruption cannot be tolerated.
Seamless Power Handover: Traditional power architectures leave facilities vulnerable to cascading failures. SolaHD RED Modules change the equation by continually monitoring the condition of the two connected power supplies. Under normal conditions, both supplies can share the load current thanks to built-in current sharing in compatible SolaHD units. If one power supply fails, such as output voltage drops below a threshold, the module automatically and seamlessly shifts the entire load to the remaining healthy supply without interruption or significant voltage drop.
Cooler Operation than Diodes: Standard diode-based designs generate excess heat that accelerates component wear and increases thermal load within enclosures. In place of diodes, SolaHD RED Modules leverage internal MOSFETs to isolate the outputs of the connected power supplies. MOSFETs run more efficiently and with lower heat generation than diode-based alternatives. The result is an extended service life for both the power supplies themselves and every sensitive component sharing the same enclosure.
Maximum Reliability: SolaHD RED Modules are engineered and certified to operate where the stakes are highest. Rated for operation across a -20°C to +70°C temperature range and compatible with both 50 and 60 Hz installations worldwide, RED Modules perform without compromise from the factory floor to the field.
