Appleton™ Contender™ 4/4X Series: Control Stations and Tumbler Switches Built for Hazardous Corrosive Locations

Appleton Contender 4/4X control station with START and STOP push buttons

Rigorously tested and cULus Listed for Hazardous Locations, the Appleton™ Contender™ 4/4X Series of control stations and tumbler switches deliver dependable circuit control in the dirtiest, most corrosive industrial environments.

Purpose-built for wet outdoor and indoor applications, Appleton™ Contender™ 4/4X control stations and tumbler switches are ideal for washdown areas, corrosive processing plants, and Class II and III hazardous locations where ignitable vapors, gases, or combustible dusts are an everyday danger. As the name applies, Contender™ 4/4X stations and switches meet NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X enclosure standards, indicating protection against dust, rain, splashing water, hose-directed washdowns, and ice damage. NEMA 4X adds explicit protection against corrosion.

Versatile Configurations

With the Contender 4/4X Series, Appleton gives plant and facility engineers a full toolkit for remote motor control and circuit selection. A wide range of push buttons and selector switches work in conjunction with contactors or magnetic starters to control motors from a safe, convenient distance. Pilot lights provide clear visual confirmation that an electrical function is active whether the operator is standing right at the panel or monitoring from across the floor. For lighting and small motor loads, the tumbler switches are engineered to prevent arcing during connect and disconnect operations, a critical safeguard in atmospheres where a single spark is one spark too many.

Simplified Installation

The Contender 4/4X Series is for use with threaded metal conduit and ships with internal/external ground terminals to reduce installation time without compromising the integrity of the enclosure. For facilities standardizing on mounting hardware, Contender 4/4X control and tumbler switch device covers are UL Classified for use with competitors mounting boxes, bringing flexibility to installations while maintaining code compliance.
