Appleton has launched the Explosionproof Rigmaster LED Series Luminaire, a linear lighting source designed specifically for hazardous (classified) locations where the wrong luminaire isn’t just a maintenance problem — it’s a potential source of ignition. In these high-risk environments, flammable gases, ignitable vapors, or combustible dusts are present constantly or are likely to occur. The Rigmaster’s explosionproof housing ensures that any internal electrical event, such as an electrical arc, a short circuit, or an overheating surface, is fully contained within the fixture and unable to propagate to the surrounding atmosphere.
Class I, Division 1 (CID1) is the highest-risk hazardous location classification defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC). The Explosionproof Rigmaster luminaire is designed for exactly those locations that include drilling and offshore rigs, oil refineries and petrochemical processors, hydrogen and biofuels plants, LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) plants, mining and underground tunnels, foundries, waste and sewer treatment facilities, power generation facilities, and paint booths.
Versatility Without Compromising Protection
The Explosionproof Rigmaster is available in two sizes — 572 mm (22.5 in) at 4,300 lumens and 1149 mm (45.3 in) at 7,600 lumens — with a slim profile as low as 124.1 mm (4.9 in). A standard model and an emergency battery backup version are both available, ensuring code-compliant illumination even during a power loss event in a classified location.
Rugged features that reinforce safety and field reliability are:
- Five casted safety retention points and captive hardware so the fixture stays secured under 4G vibration
- Standard 6 kV/3 kA surge protection shields electronics from transient events that could compromise the sealed enclosure
- Field-replaceable lens, LED driver, battery pack, and battery management module (BMM) for maintenance access without compromising the explosionproof enclosure integrity
- Precision notched locking mechanism allows fixtures to be aimed in 15-degree increments and locked, preventing unintended repositioning
- Two mounting bracket options for new construction and retrofit, compatible with other manufacturers
- Loop in/out wiring capability and precision threaded wire cover for safe, accessible installation and maintenance
- Choice of 5000K, 4000K, 3000K, 2200K, or green CCT; multiple globe materials, voltages, and mounting configurations
